About the In-Hand Salary Calculator

The In-Hand Salary Calculator computes your net worth — assets minus liabilities — and breaks it down by asset class (equity, debt, real estate, gold, cash) and liability type (home loan, car loan, credit card). Net worth is the single most honest measure of financial health: income tells you what you earn, savings rate tells you what you keep, but net worth tells you what you actually own.

How the In-Hand Salary Calculator works

  1. Enter the current market value of each asset class — investments, property, vehicles, gold, EPF, cash.
  2. Enter outstanding balances of every loan and liability — including credit card revolving balances.
  3. The calculator computes net worth = total assets − total liabilities.
  4. It also shows asset allocation %, liquidity ratio and debt-to-asset ratio for a financial health snapshot.

Inputs explained

Liquid assets
Cash, bank balance, liquid mutual funds — usable within 24 hours.
Investments
Equity MF, stocks, EPF, PPF, NPS, bonds — at current market value.
Real estate
Self-occupied home + investment properties at realistic resale value (not circle rate).
Personal assets
Vehicles, gold, jewellery — illiquid, depreciate fast except gold.
Liabilities
All outstanding loans, EMIs, credit card balances.

Formula

Net Worth = Σ Assets − Σ Liabilities
Liquid Net Worth = Σ Assets (excl. real estate & personal use) − Σ Liabilities.

Worked example

Someone with ₹40L in MFs, ₹50L EPF/PPF, ₹1.2 Cr self-occupied home and ₹60L outstanding home loan has a net worth of ₹1.5 Cr — but only ₹30L of it is liquid.

India-specific notes

  • Self-occupied homes are often the largest asset for Indian households but contribute zero monthly cash flow.
  • Gold (physical + SGB + ETFs) typically holds 5-15% allocation in Indian portfolios — high cultural weight.
  • Don't include term-insurance cover in net worth — it's protection, not an asset.
  • EPF and PPF balances are real assets — include their current accumulated value.

Tips to maximise this calculator

  • Track net worth quarterly — annual is too coarse, monthly creates noise.
  • Aim to grow net worth by at least 15% YoY in the wealth-accumulation phase.
  • Watch the liquid net worth number, not just total — illiquid wealth can't pay for emergencies.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting jewellery and old cars at purchase price — both depreciate (cars heavily, jewellery has 20-30% making-charge loss).
  • Excluding outstanding credit card balances — they're high-interest debt.
  • Inflating self-occupied home value to feel wealthier.

Glossary

Net worth
Total assets minus total liabilities — your financial scoreboard.
Liquid net worth
Net worth excluding illiquid assets like primary residence.
Asset allocation
The % split of investments across equity, debt, gold, real estate.
Debt-to-asset ratio
Liabilities ÷ assets — healthy below 50%, danger above 70%.
